Munro’s Goby

One of Australia and New Guinea’s largest and most taxonomically active goby genera, Glossogobius (“Flathead Gobies” or “Tank Gobies”) includes some of the region’s largest and most commonly encountered freshwater gobies, several only formally described within the last two decades.

Named for Ian Munro, who collected Glossogobius material from both Australia and New Guinea, Glossogobius munroi ranges from the Kimberley to the Wenlock and Johnstone Rivers in Queensland, and separately through southern New Guinea rivers. Australian and New Guinean populations differ subtly — New Guinea specimens have ctenoid (rough-edged) predorsal scales and larger midlateral spots compared with the smooth, cycloid predorsal scales of Australian fish, along with differing scale and pectoral-ray counts.
