Gudgeons (family Eleotridae, plus the blind cave gudgeons of family Milyeringidae) are a large group of Australian and New Guinean freshwater and brackish-water fishes, closely related to the true gobies, and several species are popular aquarium companions for rainbowfishes. The group ranges from tiny, jewel-like carp gudgeons through the burly Sleepy Cod to a handful of remarkable, completely blind species that live out their lives in total darkness in underground water. You can access species accounts below by clicking on the links in the list of species.

New Guinea

New Guinea’s own gudgeon fauna is vast and, in many genera (especially the New Guinean Mogurnda), still poorly documented in ANGFA’s archives beyond bare species lists from taxonomic descriptions, so most entries below are unlinked for now.
