Glossogobius nanus

Hoese & Allen, 2017

Dwarf Goby

One of Australia and New Guinea’s largest and most taxonomically active goby genera, Glossogobius (“Flathead Gobies” or “Tank Gobies”) includes some of the region’s largest and most commonly encountered freshwater gobies, several only formally described within the last two decades.

Only recently described, in 2017, Glossogobius nanus was previously known informally as “Glossogobius sp. 3.” It was collected from a nearly-dry puddle in Myall Creek, near Weipa on Cape York, during a 2015 expedition, a nice example of how unforgiving conditions in the Cape York dry season can still hold surviving native fish populations.
